Humpback Whales: In the Presence of Giants

Swimming with humpback whales: A life-changing experience

Swimming with whales, like the majestic humpback whale, is an extraordinary privilege—an encounter that leaves lasting impressions on anyone fortunate enough to experience it. I’ve shared the ocean with these gentle giants several times, from the Sardine Run in the Indian Ocean to snorkeling with orcas in the Norwegian Sea. Those cold-water encounters, often fleeting, etched themselves deeply into my memory and I craved for a warm blue water opportunity.

Journey to Silver Bank: A humpback whale sanctuary

When the chance came to travel halfway across the world to Silver Bank, a remote chain of coral shoals north of the Dominican Republic, I seized it without hesitation. Silver Bank serves as a vital breeding and calving ground for North Atlantic humpback whales. Each season, around 6,000 individuals migrate here between January and April to mate, give birth, and raise their young in the safety of a protected Marine Mammal Sanctuary.

Access to this sanctuary remains tightly controlled. Boats need special permits, and only licensed liveaboard vessels can enter. Even then, crews launch small inflatable tenders only in perfect conditions, ensuring no disturbance to the whales. Every guideline safeguards the animals and preserves their natural behavior.

A rare humpback whale encounter underwater

For most of our expedition, rough weather kept us out of the water. From the deck, we watched humpback whales breach, slap their pectoral fins, and lobtail across the surface. Each display only deepened our desire to meet them underwater. At last, a weather window opened. The captain gave a quiet nod—we had our chance.

Sliding into the water, I found myself surrounded. Five, six, seven—eight humpback whales swam gracefully around us. Their curiosity was unmistakable. Warm blue water replaced the cold green seas I knew so well. From the depths, bubbles rose, and more whales appeared.

Then it happened. I turned and saw a humpback whale, the size of a bus, floating only feet away. Still and silent, it fixed its massive eye on me. That moment felt unreal—an ancient, knowing connection that left me humbled and breathless.

The lasting impact of humpback whale encounters

Nature never guarantees moments like these. We spent only a few hours in the water during the entire trip. Yet in that short time, something unforgettable happened. My encounter with a curious humpback whale will stay with me forever.
